Cowboys in Las Palmas
On Monday evening, Giovanna our Mexican coordinator invited some of the volunteers to come with her and her friends to a town not far from Puerto Vallarta called Las Palmas. We were told very little except that it would have something to do with horses, but thirsty for some adventure and Mexican culture we all said yes!
16 in a car....
After an uncomfortable car journey there with 16 people squished into one four by four, we arrived at Las Palmas in the pouring rain. There were hundreds of four by fours parked in the very muddy carpark and all around us were men and women in cowboy hats on their horses slipping around in the mud swigging from bottles of tequila. The population from the area are mainly "rancheros"- cowboys, who ride horses daily. Once a year they all get together in a large field, where there is live music, lots of alcohol and a very rickety looking fairground!
Fair ground rides. Hand pumped?!
It is traditional for men to give women a ride on their horses, and so Giovanna found some of her friends who were more than happy to give the 13 foreign girls a ride on their horses!! As the only foreigners there, I got the feeling we were a bit of a "prize" and the men loved it.
Although we got wet, and very muddy feet it was great to see another Mexican fiesta, even though the porter loos were apparently almost as bad as Glastonbury...
