Beautiful views but strong head winds |
After months and months of training, the race was finally upon us, and Andy and I set about our epic challenge: 105 miles across Scotland, cycling, running and kayaking from Nairn to Ballaculish in two days.
After a (very) early start and a huge breakfast we headed down to the beach in Nairn, nervous and excited to get going. The initial 7 mile off-road run was an enjoyable way to ease us in as the tiny trail created a host of bottle-necks and slowed the general pace down.

Loch Ness |
However, as we began the hilly 48 mile road cycle it became apparent that we had been lulled into a false sense of security. The beautiful blue skies did nothing to help us in the face of strong head winds which meant we felt like we were cycling through treacle the majority of the time... We eventually made it to the next check-point where, after a short mile kayak across Loch Ness and run back to camp, Day 1 was over.

End of Day 1 |
Time to set up camp (yes, we actually camped), inhale some food, stock up on extra snacks, enjoy a more leisurely second dinner with a pint, and head to bed for some well needed rest ahead of Day 2!
