Ala Archa National Park, Kyrgyzstan
The traditional nomadic dwellings of the Kyrgyz people, Yurts. |
Bishkek must be the only capital city to have a National Park within 40 Km, let alone one with mountains ranging from 1,500m high to over 4,800m! At such a short hop away, it's the perfect destination for a day trip, although there are also plenty of opportunities for weekend or even week-long trips there, most starting from the old soviet mountaineering base a few Km in from the entrance.
I went for the day, venturing out for an 8 or so mile walk, with a slight detour over a rickety bridge and some undergrowth, and getting a taste for the stunning countryside that Kyrgyzstan has to offer!

Given more time, I would have spent a fair few days there, and with several glaciers and unconquered mountains there, I don't think I could possibly have been bored!
